Part 4.3 ISA - Interchange Control Header

ISA - Interchange Control Header
  • The ISA segment contains data that identifies trading partners. This segment also specifies the delimiters and terminator within the interchange. 
  • It has 16 ELEMENTS & maximum 106 CHAR or BYTES
List of ISA Element
  1. Element 1 & 2 - Authorization Information - Qualifier & ID
    • Qualifier - Min & Max 2 Character.
    • ID - Min & Max 10 Character.
  2. Element 3 & 4 - Security Information - Qualifier & Password (ENCRYPTED).
    • “00” - No Password required.
    • Qualifier - Min 1 & Max 2 Character. 
    • ID - Min 2 & Max 10 Character.
  3. Element 5 & 6 - Sender Information - Qualifier & ID.
    • Qualifier - Min & Max 2 Character.
      • 00 - No meaningful information in the next elements.
      • 01 - DUNS, it should be provided by the Dun & Bradstreet (D&B).
      • 12 - Phone Number.
      • 17 - American Bankers Association Transit Routing Number.
      • 18 - Association of American Railway Standard Distribution code.
      • 20 - Health Industry Identification Number.
      • 32 - U.S federal Employee Identification Number (FEIN).
      • ZZ - Mutually Defined. (Two trading partners will decide a single value.)
    • ID - Minimum 2 & Maximum 15 Character.
  4. Element 7 & 8 - Receiver Information - Qualifier & ID.
    • Qualifier - Min & Max 2 Character.
      • 00 - No meaningful information in the next elements.
      • 01 - DUNS.
      • 12 - Phone Number.
      • 17 - American Bankers Association Transit Routing Number.
      • 18 - Association of American Railway Standard Distribution code.
      • 20 - Health Industry Identification Number.
      • 32 - U.S federal Employee Identification Number (FEIN).
      • ZZ - Mutually Defined. (Two trading partners will decide a single value.)
    • ID - Min 2 & Max 15 Character.
  5. Element - 9 - Date (YY/MM/DD).
  6. Element - 10 - Time (HH/MM, 24 Hours Format).
  7. Element - 11 - Interchange Control Identifier 
    • Country Initial - “U” means the USA.
  8. Element - 12 - Interchange Control Version Number.
    • It indicates Version, Release, Sub Release and Industry Association
      • For Example - 0040101        
      •                     Version    Release    Sub Release    Industry
      •                     004          01            1                      VICS
    • It is commonly referred as “4031 VICS “.
  9. Element - 13 - Interchange Control Number.
    • This number is generated by the sending party, and together with the source name it uniquely identifies the exchange. This field value appears in the EDI envelope header and trailer segment. It is used to verify that the Header and Trailer are a pair.
    • It is a unique number for each transaction between sender and receiver.
    • It should be matched IEA 2nd Elements.
  10. Element - 14 - Interchange Acknowledgement ID.
    • If the value or code in the ISA 14th element is “1”, then EDI transaction requires Functional Acknowledgement.
      • “0” Acknowledge not require.
      • “1” Acknowledge is require.
  11. Element - 15 - Usage Indicator
    • It indicates whether EDI document is for testing or production.
      • “P” Production Data - Final EDI File
      • “T” Test Data - Only for test purpose.
  12. Element - 16 - Component Element Separator
    • “>”
    • This character is unique. This character will never be available in the EDI file more than one time.
    • It is 105 character of ISA segment.
DUNS number
ISA (6th, 8th elements)
The Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number is a unique nine-digit identification number provided by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). The DUNS number is site specific. Therefore, each distinct physical location of an entity such as branches, divisions, and headquarters, may be assigned a DUNS number.
